CONVERSATIONS WITH JOAN OF ARC

By acclaimed British author, Tony Sullivan.

'There is more than one kind of victory'

Joan of Arc was, of course, the girl who led the Dauphin’s army to victory over the English and was burned at the stake when 19, by an England-friendly Church. But what do you know Nicolas Loiseleur, reputed spy and agent provocateur, who visited her repeatedly in prison and felt for her more than a priest should feel for a condemned witch?

Although her military campaigns are not neglected, Conversations with Joan of Arc concentrates on her imprisonment in Rouen when she was forced to share her cell with three guards who treated her abominably. Based on historical fact, this is a moving account of one of the great heroines of the Middle Ages, a girl who refused to accept her inferior position in a male-dominated society; and in her trial for heresy bravely challenged the Roman Catholic Church in the person of the notorious Bishop Cauchon. It is also the story of Loiseleur, the man whose life she changed, much against his wishes.

CONVERSATIONS WITH JOAN OF ARC edition by Tony Sullivan Literature Fiction eBooks

This is a very interesting and especially moving account of the last days of "La Pucelle d`orléans", France's folk heroine and Roman Catholic saint who was tried for heresy by the tribunal led by Bishop Pierre Cauchon and subsequently burned at the stake at the age of 19.

This fiction concentrates on her imprisonment in Rouen where she was visited in numerous occasions by Nicolas Loiseleur, chanoine de Chartres and of Rouen. This story is as much about him as it is about the heroine. The legend says that he was so upset after her execution that his actions brought him unwanted attention from the English.

The story is very passionate and is written in a resonant tone from a 3rd person perspective. I could clearly imagine that behind all this scorn was a woman who stubbornly refused to tell the people what they wanted to hear. It must have been a nightmare and the author has expertly described how this poor woman was tormented, taunted and condemned. I will not expand on her exploits in the midst of the conversations some are highlighted. IMO this fiction is a fascinating way to relate a vision of what could have transpired between a prisoner and her confidant......Even with the knowledge of its ending, this story is nevertheless captivating and revisiting this trouble part of history in this manner was particularly refreshing. Well-done Mr. Sullivan I will definitely read more of your work.

CONVERSATIONS WITH JOAN OF ARC edition by Tony Sullivan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I started reading it and just couldn't get into it. Not often do I quit reading a book, but I did this one. It just didn't grab my attention.
Great book. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to know the conversion on this great saint
The work is amazing and very well researched. I especially liked the insights into the personalities of the figures presented, partiularly the two main characters. As a historian, I would've liked to see a list of Mr. sullivan's sources, as some of his information was new to me and I wanted to know the basis for some of his conclusions. Aside from that, the book is great and well worth the price. It's also quite a gripping read--I was up way later than I should've been reading it! Anyone who has an interest in Joan of Arc would do well to give this work a read.
A although I knew the basics of this story I confess I was horrified at the treatment of Joan, and they way they viewed Women ...so wether or not This was a true account ....well it was disturbing in so many ways...the torture and wild machinations of the lords ,bishops etc ..we're absolutely disgusting.wether In the name of God our Church ..it proved that The Catholic Church has not changed its views on women in Centuries....This entire book made me very ,very sad..This take on Joan was different and written in an easier manner than many...If it was a total work of fiction I would still be disturbed but as a Catholic it just made me sick ....( the story was based on fact) the author did a commendable job and it was never boring but I am sorry to say I still do not know if she was a Saint or heretic
